How to Correctly Use Acme Thread Plug Gages on the Shop Floor

Using a Go/No-Go thread plug gage seems straightforward, but specialized geometries like Acme profiles require careful operator technique. Inspectors frequently google how to use an Acme thread plug gage to prevent damage to both the part and the tool. Because of the steep 29-degree thread angle, forcing a gage into a dirty or burred hole will cause immediate binding and premature tool wear. Before starting an inspection, operators must thoroughly clean the internal machined threads and remove any trapped micro-chips. The “Go” member should thread into the workpiece smoothly by hand without utilizing excessive torque or mechanical assistance. Conversely, the “No-Go” member must not enter the part more than three complete turns to ensure the pitch diameter is within tolerance.

Training your machining staff on proper feel and handling techniques saves thousands of dollars in ruined inspection instruments. It also ensures that your final part dimensions are accurate and completely repeatable across every production shift. Protect your metrology assets by standardizing your benchtop inspection procedures.
